Queering the Collections Network
Het Nieuwe Instituut's research project _Collecting Otherwise _and the Queering the Collections network are organising a webinar on 31 March 2021. The goal of the event is to share thoughts, insights and experiences relating to the development of intersectional awareness in heritage collections and collection policies.
31 March 2021 12:58
In this meeting, Setareh Noorani and Carolina Pinto will discuss Collecting Otherwise's enquiries into the collection of Het Nieuwe Instituut. Also joining the conversation will be Olle Lundin and Eliza Steinbock, who will tell us about the similar efforts of the Queering the Collections network, which promotes the collection, interpretation and exhibition of queer heritage in the Netherlands, and the research project The Critical Visitor, which investigates how heritage institutions can achieve inclusion and accessiblity in their organisations, collections and exhibitions.
Collecting Otherwise is one of the research projects currently being developed by Het Nieuwe Instituut as part of the Rethinking the Collection initiative, and under the umbrella of Disclosing Architecture. Exploring the value and significance of the collection in the face of current developments in society, Rethinking the Collection examines the collection policy and makes proposals for alternative approaches.
Collecting Otherwise
The _Collecting Otherwise _project focuses on developing speculative, critical and artistic research based on the collection and collection policies of Het Nieuwe Instituut. With its first initiative, Collecting Otherwise is focusing on fostering intersectional awareness in the National Collection and on possible future acquisition policies. By looking at the archives through specifically feminist, queer and decolonial lenses, Collecting Otherwise aims to highlight the often minority perspectives that are generally obscured by standard architectural and archival practice. By means of case studies of a series of archives which are in the collection or are currently being acquired, Collecting Otherwise hopes to shed light on the objects, systems and processes entangled with intersectional, international and intergenerational notions of feminist and queer spatial practice, and to re-inscribe them into the National Collection and disciplinary history.
